Revolutionizing Neonatal Sepsis diagnosis
Ongoing Innovation #Health #Bioengineering #Electronics #Optics #Basic Sciences #3D PrintingBy going through a MAKE ! project and developping a first prototype, students are developping entrepreneurial skills inculding managing human resources, managing budget, looking for partnerships and sponsors, managing tight time constraints, proactively seeking solutions to complex problems, managing knowledge and many other.. NEOSENS is a start-up born from the interdisciplinary project Sensus (see the following page. During this project, students (passionate about the same topic) have to develop together a bio-sensor to participate to the international competition SensUs. By doing so, the team of student of the 2023 edition identified a potential market opportunity and they were already equiped to start an entrepreneurial adventure.
*Neonatal Sepsis is a life-threatening medical emergency where immediate antibiotic treatment is key to patient survival. Yet, it’s extremely challenging to diagnose at an early stage as newborns present nonspecific clinical signs and gold-standard diagnostic tests are slow, inaccurate, and expensive. *
This results in overdiagnosis and prolonged unnecessary antibiotic treatment for approximately 12% of all newborns. Those unnecessary treatments lead to serious adverse effects for the newborns, add substantial financial burdens to Neonatal intensive care units (NICUs), and amplifies the alarming increase of antibiotic resistance — Global Health Threat by the WHO.
NEOSENS revolutionizes Neonatal Sepsis diagnosis by developing an AI-based point-of-care diagnostic assistant to provide an accurate sepsis score from a drop of blood.
