About MAKE

MAKE is all about supporting student projects and ideas. However, the goal is not to let students learning alone by themwselves but to truly coach them and to provide them the appropriate resources, framework and community in a way that makes prototyping accessible to everyone!

Values of the makerspaces

Whoever you are (except if you are not studying at EPFL) and whatever you look like, you are welcome to come in our makerspaces. Technical workshops are sometimes subjected to strong stereotypes, but they should not. Whoever is creative and eager to learn can transform their ideas into something real.

PLEASE do not be afraid to ask questions. There are NO stupid questions. You might be able to solve complex differential equations and at the same time have no idea how use a certain tool, and that’s ok! You will learn fast without a doubt.

Everyone should feel safe in the prototyping network. We do everything we can to ensure students are working safely.

The best way to predict the future is to invent it.

Pedagogical objectives

By open ended we refer to projects that can have many different outcomes and possible solutions. Students learn to deal with complexity and uncertainty.

All projects supported by MAKE have a practical dimension. Students reinforce the theory they have seen in class by practicing.

Projects where ideas are proposed by the students themselves from the very beginning of the design process. When ideas are proposed by students, they tend to be more intrinsically motivated by their project. This emotional involvement helps learning more deeply through projects.

It can be interdisciplinary projects allowing students from multiple disciplines to interact, or it can also be physical spaces where students from all disciplines of the school can meet and exchange ideas.

Project based learning is a great opportunity to develop skills that can be useful in any type of professionnal environment. Project management such as planning and working within budgetary constraints, human management, thinking in systems, evaluate the sustainability of a project/prototype etc...
